Operating a data center requires significant power to run and maintain servers, networking equipment, cooling systems, and other infrastructure. With approximately 8.5 million data centers worldwide, the increasing demand for data processing has led to a rise in power consumption. In recent years, the power usage of each server has grown from 1.5 kW to 3 kW, reflecting the surge in data traffic and the expanding capabilities of modern servers. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global energy consumption by data centers reached between 220 and 320 billion kWh, accounting for 0.9% to 1.3% of global power usage.
